Bender's Brainiacs : Periods 4 & 6 Social Studies
Social Studies Class Overview

The Focus for the sixth grade social studies is Ancient Civilizations. We will be studying the following units as outlined by the California State Standards:

  • Early Man,
  • Mesopotamia,
  • Ancient India,
  • Ancient China,
  • Ancient Egypt,
  • Ancient Israel,
  • Ancient and Classical Greece,
  • The Early Roman Empire,
  • Christianity and the Decline of Rome

(Unit in red is the unit we are currently studying)

We will go into greater depth on some units, as certain topics lend themselves to greater exploration and student interest. Students will read from the text, take notes, answer pertinent questions, view and respond to visual media, make and interpret maps, graphs, and charts and take chapter quizzes. Students will be involved in various projects and simulation activities throughout the year, including at least one research report, and one power point project.

GATE Dana Point Trip
I handed out trip information paperwork and permission slips for the Ocean Institute's Sea Floor Explorer Overnight. Please read the information carefully and discuss with your child. This is not a class field trip, but a GATE extra curricular trip.  It is limited to the first 42 kids to have their paperwork completed and turned into me, with the $100 check. Your child MUST meet the academic requirements. He or she cannot be failing any class to sign up. The trip is Oct 20 – 21st and money and paperwork needs to be turned in by Oct 10th.
Original Art
After analyzing Paleolithic are, students are to create a piece of original art. They can draw, paint, mold, build something using any materials they want. They must write a two paragraph description of the piece, analyzing it like they did in class. How did they make it. What materials/colors did they use and why they made it. They must choose one of the theories that they wrote on the back of their notes as a reason.  The artwork and the written paragraghs are due on Friday Sept. 2. Students should have fun with this, expressing themselves through art.
6th Grade Spirit Olympics and Ice Cream Social
Show your spirit Falcons! This Friday is the Spirit Olympics. We need to beat the other teams in spirit and competition! First, wear as much blue as you can!  Make blue Falcon posters. Wear blue facepaint. You can even spray paint your hair blue...get the washout spary color for hair! Second, we will be out on the field and in the quad for two hours, so remember to dress cool and use sunscreen. You can wear a hat for the sun on Friday, and bring a beach towel to sit on the grass.  WATER bottles to drink from is a good idea too.  But, the most important thing is to bring a spirited attitude! Support our team members! Remember,  Falcons soar Above the Rest!
Parent Letter and Survey

Parents,
Please fill out the white survey and have your child return it to me as quickly as possible.  If you would print your e-mail address on the form, it would help facilitate a more accurate input of parent e-mails. Once your e-mail is entered into Teacherease, you will receive a password, which you can change, to begin accessing grades and other information.  Thanks!  Mrs. Bender

Welcome to the Falcons Team!
Welcome to Moore and to the Falcons team.  Prepare yourselves to have a great 6th grade year, full of excitement, adventure, academic challenges, and the makings of lasting friendships.  I look forward to meeting all of you and helping each one of you to become the best Monarch/Falcon at Moore!  Get ready!
Weekly routine
When we start a new chapter, we will preview it first.  After we chunk and discuss the chapter, you will complete Cornell Notes (double column notes) on the lesson.  Take good notes because you can use them on the lesson review quiz. There will be other activities in class and out, but taking good notes fromt the text is a skill that will help you be successful in all your academic classes.
